teaching philosopy statement

On the inside of my left wrist, I have two words permanently written on my skin in ink–

 inspire them

As a parent, educator, artist, and human being, these two words are a constant reminder of how I hope to make an impact in this world — by making choices and living in a way that will inspire others to think beyond their immediate surroundings.

Teaching is an opportunity for furthering that impact — by providing knowledge and fostering an environment for ideas to transform from inspiration into action. It is my intent to enrich the lives of students and peers through my own creative passion and insatiable desire to learn. As a Textile Artist, I also recognize the importance of passing the knowledge of a craft that fell out of favor for a generation or two and reviving it with a modern approach. As environmental issues have become more concerning, there is a growing interest in sustainable practices in the fashion industry. I see this as an exciting opportunity for ingenuity and experimentation in the classroom and the studio.

I believe that we learn best by doing, allowing our minds to connect new information through the application of new skills. A project-based curriculum allows for endless opportunities to connect and implement ideas, especially in the field of Textiles. The classroom can become a bridge between an expansive, modern industry and a focused, traditional craft. Characteristics of fibers can be studied through surface design techniques and manipulation of fabrics. The historical, cultural, economic, and environmental context of the industry can also be explored in a variety of media, making it accessible to all levels of interest and experience.

I believe that a diverse approach to learning is important in any subject, always searching for ways to encourage and inspire every student in the classroom. It is my hope that with each opportunity I have to teach, something new is learned by everyone — including myself.
